Welcome to the Chicony Homepage on MacDat!

Chicony is a Taiwanese hardware manufacturer, nowadays focused on keyboard and peripheral production. From 1987 to 2000, Chicony operated a laptop divison (known as the Mobile Products (MP) Division), in which they acted as an Original Design Manufacturer (ODM), selling their laptops to various smaller companies to brand and sell. As such, rarely will you see a Chicony laptop branded as a Chicony.

Chicony LT3400

Released: 1989

The LT3400 is a 286-based system. I don't have any photos that I have permission to use, but you can find several here.

It was the first of their laptops to show up in FCC records, so it would have been the first sold in the USA. It's possible the LT3500 and LT3600 actually released earlier though. It's somewhat between the size of a luggable and a laptop. This one is notable as Chicony actually sold it under their own brand.

This one has a VARTA barrel battery on the motherboard, just a warning!

Chicony LT3500

Released: ??

We know Chicony made an LT3400 and an LT3600. There is a laptop shown here with the LT3500 model number, and with similar lettering to the other two. I can't currently prove it's also a Chicony system, but I HIGHLY suspect that it is. Since it doesn't appear in FCC records, it was likely not sold in the US.

Chicony LT3600

Released: ??

The Chicony LT3600 is a large luggable laptop that was actually sold with Chicony branding! It doesn't show up on FCC records, so it was likely never sold in the US. This is consistent with online references to this model, which seem to all come from Europe.

Chicony LT5400

Released: 1990

Sold direct under the Chicony brand. FCC records exist, so it was likely sold in the US, but the only eBay listing I found was in Europe. It uses the same case that the LT3400 does.

Chicony LT5300

Released: 1990

Large luggable, different design from the LT3600. Just like the LT5400, FCC records exist, but the one listing I could find was in Europe.

Chicony NB5620

Released: 1991

Very little known about this model. No specs beyond the processor: 386SX @20MHz. Earliest mentioned on Chicony's archived website.

Chicony PB9350

Released: 1991

Uses 486DX @33MHz, no other info. FCC records exist but the one site with photos up is in Europe, so they're probably more common there. It's not quite a compact laptop, but not quite a luggable either.

Chicony NB6600

Released: Unknown

Another unknown, with only a mention and an image on Chicony's archived site. Uses 386SL @20MHz, no other info.

Chicony PB8350

Chicony NB5625

386 25MHz system. This one didn't show up on Chicony's website, but I found one for sale on eBay under the Ultra brand. It shares the same case as the NB5620.

Chicony NB5500

Released: 1992

Another unknown, Chicony used the same image as the NB6600. Uses AMD386SXL @25MHz, no other info.

Chicony NB8620

Released: 1992

Chicony used the same image as the last one. There is a video of this laptop online, and I got the following info: Cyrix 486SLC @33MHz, Oak chipset, 4MB RAM onboard, VARTA soldered barrel battery (uh oh), passive matrix grayscale LCD. I'm guessing based on the photo from Chicony that there was a color model.

Chicony SE7

Released: 1995

This one was initially only found by the FCC ID, but I then found a Zenith laptop with the matching ID (Z-Star ZPR-6950-KI, also marked "SE7D", may be the Z-Star ES). It might be one that was custom-made only for Zenith.
