Sotec (sometimes stylized as SOTEC) was a Japanese computer manufacturer and ODM that manufactured/sold laptops from 1986 through 2008, when they were acquired by Onkyo, who phased out the brand shortly after. Sotec sold their laptops domestically under their own brand name starting in 1993. They named their laptop product line the WinBook, which meant that when they did briefly try to enter the US laptop market in 1996, they had to rename their WinBook Bird the "WinBird" due to the name already being taken in that market.

While Sotec (for the most part) didn't market their laptops outside of Japan, they did do ODM sales. They were known as the "high quality" option as compared to the more plentiful Taiwanese ODMs, and based on the Sotec hardware that I've handled, this is a fair assessment. Their build and plastics quality seems good.

Sotec manufactured several models for Gateway, including the ColorBook, ColorBook², and I think also the Solo 5100 and Solo 5150. They also manufactured the Datavue SPARK, Intra LT-386SX, the Hyundai Super-LT3, and the Hyundai Super-LT5.
