Laptop Floppy Drive Info
This page is a reference on laptop floppy drives used in the 1990s. You can assume that any drive in this list noted to be belt-drive has a nearly 100% chance of having a bad belt at this point. By the early-mid 90s, the laptop floppy drive pinout was mostly standardized, but very minor things in the cable type often differ between drive models, so replacing one drive model with another isn't often possible (differing eject button locations is another problem).
Citizen U1DA Series |
Early slimline drive, was used in some early Toshiba portables (like the T1000SE). Needs belt replacement and recapping. The heads on this drive are mounted sideways, which makes replacing the belt a royal PITA. Type: 1.44MBSpindle: Belt-Drive Height: 19mm Discontinued: 1995 Datasheet: Missing |

Citizen V1DA Series |
Slimmer than the U1DA, used in the Compaq LTE Lite and several other systems. Replacement belts are available from a German eBay seller, and there is also a US source here. I have not vetted any of these sources. Type: 1.44MBSpindle: Belt-Drive Height: 15mm Discontinued: 1997 Datasheet: Missing |
Citizen W1D
|
The W1D was one of the most common drives found in laptops from the mid 1990s, and occasionally in late 90s laptops as well. There are two different templates for 3D printing your own replacement belt, here and here. You can also find replacement belts on eBay. Replacing the belt is fairly easy. There is a pretty good tutorial video here. This drive also has a couple of surface-mount electrolytic capacitors on one of the PCBs. If your drive is an early unit from 1994 (I believe this was the W1D's introduction year), I would definitely recommend replacing them. 1995 and 1996 drives should probably also be recapped just in case. Type: 1.44MBSpindle: Belt-Drive Height: 11mm Discontinued: 2001 Datasheet: Missing |
Epson SMD-1000 |
Must have a couple leaky caps replaced. Type: 1.44MBSpindle: Direct Drive Height: ? Discontinued: ? Datasheet: Missing |
Epson SMD-1100 |
Fairly common drive in early-mid 90s laptops. Type: 1.44MBSpindle: Direct Drive Height: ? Discontinued: ? Datasheet: Missing |
Epson SMD-1240
|
This drive was used in the Compaq LTE Elite 4/100CX prototype. Presumably, it ended up in other laptops too, but I don't know of any yet. Type: 1.44MBSpindle: Belt-Drive Height: ? Discontinued: ? Datasheet: Missing |
Matsushita EME-278 |
Used in many early 90s Toshiba laptops. Currently there is no source for a replacement belt, and these drives are very picky about belts. If a belt fits, but doesn't match the original spec closely enough, the spindle will not spin at the correct speed and the drive won't read. Type: 1.44MBSpindle: Belt-Drive Height: ? Discontinued: ? Datasheet: Missing |
Matsushita EME-279 |
Used in many mid 90s Toshiba laptops. Unlike the EME-278, belts do appear to be available for this one on eBay. I have not vetted this seller. Type: 1.44MBSpindle: Belt-Drive Height: ? Discontinued: ? Datasheet: Missing |
Mitsumi D359C2 |
This drive dates to the early 90s. Specs for a replacement belt are 4in x 2mm x 0.5mm. You can find a compatible replacement here. There is also one 47uf 16v SMD electrolytic which must be replaced. Type: 1.44MBSpindle: Belt-Drive Height: ? Discontinued: ? Datasheet: Missing |
NEC FD1238H |
This drive was used in the NEC Versa 4000 and presumably a number of other laptops. The Teac FD-05HG is a direct drop-in replacement, down to the eject button location. Type: 1.44MBSpindle: Belt-Drive Height: ? Discontinued: ? Datasheet: Missing |
NEC FD3238H |
-- Type: 1.44MBSpindle: Direct Drive Height: ? Discontinued: ? Datasheet: Missing |
TEAC FD-05HF |
This was a very common drive in roughly 1993/94. It is the same size as the later FD-05HG, and I think the FD-05HG is a drop-in replacement. Needs one cap replaced, otherwise reliable. Type: 1.44MBSpindle: Direct Drive Height: ? Discontinued: ? Datasheet: Link |
TEAC FD-05HG |
The FD-05HG is basically the gold standard of reliable floppy drives. It was one of the most common drives found in laptops from 1995 and onward, and rarely fails. May need one cap replaced depending on how early it was manufactured. Type: 1.44MBSpindle: Direct Drive Height: ? Discontinued: ? Datasheet: Missing |
