Welcome to the ASE Homepage on MacDat!
ASE Technologies was a Taiwan-based Original Design Manufacturer (ODM) that produced laptop computers. They were founded as a division of the larger ASE (Advanced Semiconductor Engineering) Group, which is still in business today. This particular division of the company shut down sometime around the year 2000.
ASE specialized in producing custom designs for larger brands, so many of their laptops were not sold as generics. That being said, they did make regular generic laptops as well. Brand-exclusive laptops that ASE manufactured include most models of the IBM ThinkPad 365 Series, and the WinBook XP and XP5. They also manufactured several models of the Epson ActionNote series, and most (if not all) of Transmonde's laptops, although these weren't exlcusive models. Legend (aka Lenovo) also sold some ASE laptops as models in their "Soleil" line in China.
Seemingly all of ASE's laptops were named after birds, which I just think is neat. That being said, the bird names were seemingly only used in ASE's own marketing, and as an internal codename. The model numbers on the laptops are far more boring (seemingly, the third digit of the model number will be the first letter of the codename - one example being the ANC-P, which is the Canary).
Own an ASE laptop? I'm in need of information on many models, along with images. See this page for info on how to reach me.
